Remote lab on and off switch

    Hey guys,

I don't know where to post this, I am sorry if this is posted in the wrong section.

I am looking for some kind of on and off switch for my routers and switches.

    This is my entire lab:

    Skeletek 16U rack, 1x 2620XM (w/ 2x WIC-1T), 2x 2620 (w/ 3x WIC-1T), 1x 2620 w/ NM-8A/S, 2511 Console server, 1x 3550 POE, 1x 3550, 2x 2950EI, 1x 2950.

Right now, I can remotely connect to my console server to do some labbing,  but I have to turn all my routers before I go to work.  I am planning to (if possible) to add another equipment to remotely turn on all my some routers and switches, and turn them off remotely when done.

The cheaper it is the better, but of course must be realiable device.

    What do you guys use?

    Thanks

I personally use APC AP9212 Master Switch Power Distribution Unit. Search Ebay. I think you can buy it for 150$ or less.

RE: Remote lab on and off switch

There are lots of options, some cheaper than others:

    http://www.ebay.com/itm/APC-AP9211-MasterSwitch-PDU-AP9606-Web-SNMP-Card-/300601863671?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item45fd446df7#ht_2382wt_1396

Make sure the connectors match what you need.  Not all with be NEMA 5-15 for normal US power outlets.

    Brian,

    Sorry to interrupt you.

I first saw you on CCIE 12 days Bootcamp.

    Good contents and well sophisticated.

One thing I would like you to do.

Could you be more specific about the contents?

    I mean;

    22 Mock Lab 1 Configuration Part 1

    23 Mock Lab 1 Configuration Part 2

    24 Mock Lab 1 Configuration Part 3

    25 Mock Lab 1 Configuration Part 4

At this rate, we viewers have no choice but to open each of them.

If we would like to strength the particular area, it takes time and patience.

    Same thing can be seen on;

8 Interior Gateway Routing Part 1

9 Interior Gateway Routing Part 2

10 Interior Gateway Routing Part 3

I just want to watch EIGRP, but which one?

I will leave it entirely to your kind consideration.

    Thanks in advance.

If you’re looking for a specific topic then you should watch the CCIE R&S Advanced Technologies Class.  The format of the 5-day bootcamp is different than this, you have to watch the whole thing as you go through the labs.

What do you guys think of this?  It seems pretty easy to configure since it uses WebGUI.
I am looking at the manual of the AP9211 and the CLI is kind of confusing.

Looks good.  They all basically do the same thing, mainly the difference is the price, whether it is rackmount or not, and whether it is a UPS battery.

Just follow the prompts - after selecting a device or group of devices to change the power state, you will need to type YES to validate the command.

Of course you will need to configure network address via console before the network interface will work unless you are using its default ip address.

What's nice about the ones that have console access is that you can talk to it through your terminal server as well.

I just received my AP9211 with AP9606.  I powered it on, but I am unable to configure it.

I tried to use the Serial port on the AP9211 using the Cisco Serial port.  The other end of the serial port is connected to my MBP's NIC port.  I am not sure if the MBP is able to connect to it, but I have no idea where to connect the other end(RJ45) other than the NIC port on my laptop.

I opened SecureCRT and added this configuration on the serial settings.

    Baud Rate 2400

    Data Bits 8

    Stop Bits 1

    Parity None

    Handshaking None

    Local Echo Off

    Terminal Type ANSI (VT100

The SecureCRT seems to be connected (with a green check mark), but I cannot type or do anything.

Is there a way to configure this AP9211? Am I missing some hardware that I need to use to console to this AP9211?

Re: RE: Remote lab on and off switch

    nixwork,

The console port is RS-232/EIA-232 serial DB-9 male - it needs to connect to a serial port.

For my Win 7 laptop that does not have a serial port, I use a USB to serial adapter - works well with terminal applications, such as this, but does not work well for more intensive data transfers. I don't have a Mac Book yet, so don't know if this type of adapter is supported.

For this to work, you need a DB-9 female to DB-9 female cable - the USB to serial adapter has a DB-9 male connector, as does my XP laptop, and most older desktops and laptops.

The cable I just tried from my XP laptop to the APC AP9606 consists of a Cisco console cable (DB-9 female to RJ45 male) and the DB-9 female to RJ-45 female that was part of the console/aux cable kit with a 25XX router. The kit consisted of a DB-9 female to RJ45 female, DB-25 female to RJ45 female, DB-25 male to RG-45 female, and a rollover cable (RJ45 male to RJ45 male).

If you have a 2509/2511 Access Server/Router, you can use one of the cables with a DB-9 female to RJ45 female adapter - just need to configure the 2400 baud rate for the Async port.

Once you get access via the console port and configure IP address, you can telnet to the APC for further configuration, and to control the power outlets.

The quick configuration guide also shows using arp to configure the IP address: arp -s <ip address> <mac address>. The mac address may be on the AP9606 card - I don't see it on the outside of my AP9211.

It looks to me like you need a cable that is DB-9 female serial on both ends (a null modem cable).  I recently got a NPS-115 and I used a Cisco console cable with a RJ-45-to-DB9 adapater on the RJ-45 end.  A brief glance at the manual suggets you may be able to connect via an arp method or using bootp

I tried to use the "arp -s ip-address mac-address" on my MBP, but I am unable to telnet to the AP9211.

The AP9211's AP9606 is connected is connected to my FIOS router, and I can ping the ip address that I used on arp -s command.  However, I still can't telnet to the AP9211.

About the bootp, is that the old DHCP?  I do not know how to use bootstrap.

Re: RE: Remote lab on and off switch

    nixwork,

It sounds like you need to use the serial console port to get into this thing. Telnet can be disabled for the AP9211/9606. Bootp, which is similar to DHCP, is also disabled when a static IP address is configured.

Are you trying to telnet from the router? If not, you might try this.

Do you have a router with an aux port? Might be able to configure the aux port as Async, set the baud rate, and plug the RJ45 connector into the aux port to connect to the APC console DB-9 port.

I was trying to telnet from my laptop.

Yes, I have 2511 and 2620 routers.  I have the 2511 on right now and I have connected the Cisco Console cable to the AP9211 and the RJ45 to the 2511 AUX port.

What is the command to configure the AUX port to talk to the AP9211?

This is what I added to the 2511 AUX:

    line aux 0

     modem InOut

transport preferred lat pad telnet rlogin mop udptn nasi

     transport input all

transport output lat pad telnet rlogin mop udptn nasi

When I do the show line, I got this:

    *   17 AUX   9600/9600  - inout     -    -    -      0       0     0/0       -

    *   18 VTY              -    -     23    -    -      1       0     0/0       -

I also created a loopback0 with an ip address 1.1.1.1/24

When I tried to telnet (telnet 1.1.1.1 2017), I got "% Connection refused by remote host".  I also tried to clear the line 17, but still getting the same message.  Am I missing a configuration for AUX port?
