    Internetworking with TCP/IP 5th Edition

I'm just starting out in my CCIE studies, and through my work i have alot of the suggested reading.  My question:  Is Internetworking with TCIP/IP 5th Edition worth buying, or is most of the material covered within the Routing TCP/IP Vol 1 & 2?  I have free access to the Routing volumes through my work library, but if Internetworking is worth it i can go out and purchase that on my own.

Thanks for the help/advice in advance!

Yes, it's a very good read. I used it for my CCIE written prep. It will provide you with a lot of background and help solidify TCP/IP but won't contain much topics directly related to the CCIE. For me it was worth reading, I don't like shortcuts so I prepared well for the written and did a lot of reading.

If you are in the field of networking then any good book lke this is the foundation of all the networking stuff not just ccie. I used to studied tcp/ip by Richard Stevens book in my college days. I must tell you its an excellent book and its more than worth buying it.

Nope.  That was my other hang up with buying it, it doesn't appear to be in ebook form :(

Was hoping the topics would be largely covered in "Routing TCP/IP" but I'll go purchase "Internetworking TCP/IP".

    Thanks for the advice!

Unfortunately it isn't available on Safari. I still have a ticket open with them for the inclusion of the book. If I hear back from them I'll post it here.

It is definetly one of my favourite books.

The second edition of TCP/IP Illustrated Vol1 (ISBN-13: 978-0-321-33631-6, avail on Safari) has been released a couple of weeks ago, which was updated by another author and not Stevens himself. It includes now a lot of Wireshark packet capture examples and updates on new TCP features. But I haven't had time to review it yet.

Routing TCP/IP covers a lot of topics from the ground up, but is also very focused on the Cisco command line. I would recommend to read also completly vendor neutral material like this book. Comer's book has opened my eyes in many ways and helped me to understand the fundamentals better on how different technologies work. Especially the chapter on Multicast was awesome.

Douglas Comer is the author of the book.

Re: Internetworking with TCP/IP 5th Edition

Another good book - unrelated to directly to TCP/IP is "Interconnections Second Edition - Bridges, Routers, Switches and Internetworking Protocols" by Radia Perlman aka inventor of spanning tree and forma employee of DEC.

There is a lot protocol coverage - some of which is historic - but it will give you a nice view of networking from a non Cisco view of the world.

Poem on page 58 is quite amusing.
